Kepplestone Manor

Client Brief

The client would like to re-plant the raised beds and borders at the front of Kepplestone Manor to better reflect the modern bright apartments inside the building. There is a huge volume of passing traffic along Queens Road and it is currently not possible to distinguish Kepplestone Manor from the residential flats in the next block. The manager would like a strong ‘wow’ design, with the potential to add lights for Christmas.

Site Assessment

The recently built flats have strong vertical lines and are an imposing presence on Queens Road. The current planting around the building is loose, messy and lacks definition. The site is open and north facing.

Design Idea

To create a clean, minimalist planting scheme to the front of the building. This will be achieved by clearing out the exisiting planting and then planting with four pencil conifers on each side of the path to reflect the strong vertical presence of building. They will also draw attention to the main entrance to the building and the sign from Queens Road. The trees will also be suitable for Christmas lights. They are to be balanced by box balls and the grass Stipa gigantea (see sketch).
